Depictions from the life of Prophet Elijah: his flight into the desert and his ascent to heaven

Good condition

The center of the composition is occupied by the tall figure of Prophet Elijah. He is positioned in front of the entrance to a cave within the wilderness, as explained in the Old Testament. A raven descends towards him, bringing him food. The smaller scenes to the left narrate events from his sojourn in the wilderness. To the right are displayed the illustrations of Elijah crossing the river Jordan and his ascent to heaven with a fiery chariot pulled by four horses. The vehicle is depicted at the upper part within a red field. While on the chariot, Elijah offers his coat to his disciple Elisha, which is an indication for Elisha to continue and pass on the prophet’s teachings. The upper left corner shows the open skies with an image of Christ, who is welcoming Elijah in paradise. The icon is executed in the traditional style, characteristic for the 18th century.



The icon is in a good condition with minor signs of age and wear. The surface shows scattered craquelure as well as cracks and blemishes that are mostly touched up. The sponki on the reverse are missing. The overall dimensions measure 34 x 27.4 cm. (nlu)
