Lot 50: Letters to James Denver 1846, 1861

Sign In to see what this sold for

Remarkable Content Poems to James William Denver as the Commander in Army of the Tennessee
(JAMES WILLIAM DENVER), Mexican War Captain, as the Commander in Army of the Tennessee, for whom the city of Denver, Colorado is named!
Letter Grouping including two letters and three poems (two together) from Mary Denver, James' sister. Mary was a contributor to the "Authors" magazine and a book of her poems was published after her death. All are to be from 1846 except for a lengthy 1861 letter regarding the beginning of the Civil War. Being an author, her letter has great writing: "But I must now turn to another and less agreeable subject -- War -- Civil war, is upon us, with all its honors!... Bragg is firing on Fort Pickens at this time (Of course you have heard of the surrender of Sumter)." Lots and lots of other great Civil War content. The poems are written in her hand and are titled "The Messenger Rose," "The United States," and "Freedom's Watchword." A unique, historic archive which belongs in a City of Denver museum! (4 items).
