OHIO RIVER LANDSCAPE BY EDWARD BEYER. Pen and ink on wove paper, signed twice lower left and dated 1854. An exceptional drawing of a pastoral river scene with figures in the foreground, a U.S. Mail packet boat on the river, and a town in the distant background. Ex Dr. and Mrs. Henry P. Deyerle, see SothebyÆs (Charlottesville, Virginia), May 26-27, 1995, lot 773. 9" h. 12 3/4"w. Light toning. Executed with a level of detail typical of Beyer (1820-1865), a German-born artist who received his artistic training at the Dusseldorf Academy. He lived and worked in Dresden before immigrating to the U.S. in 1848. Initially, he lived in Newark, and then Philadelphia. During this time, he partnered with Leo Elliot (French, born circa 1814) on a major panoramic view entitled The Wars for Liberty in Upper Italy, Rome, and Hungary, which toured the country, its last stop being in Cincinnati. Beyer then spent the 1850s travelling in western Virginia producing landscape studies that formed the basis of his "Album of Virginia" which Beyer printed in Germany and issued in Richmond in 1857 and 1858. Upon completion of the "Album", Beyer returned to Germany and turned his attention to another panorama, this one detailing his sojourn in America. The perspective of this drawing is from the Ohio shore (the flatboats are travelling left to right and downriver) and the town on the opposite shore lies at the confluence of the Ohio and another river (not immediately visible behind the wooded point). The terrain, the type of packet boat, and Beyer's known travels suggest that the scene is of the Upper Ohio as it runs between Ohio and West Virginia (then western Virginia). A more specific location of this scene, however, cannot be identified.
