Southwest Virginia or East Tennessee pottery jar

Sign In to see what this sold for

East Tennessee or Southwest Virginia stoneware jar, applied ear handles with incised line and two sine waves around upper midsection, inscribed "4" denoting gallon capacity. The "redware" appearance of this jar is similar to many forms found in the East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia area. Whether the mixture of grey and red clay demonstrate an attempt to fire stoneware or demonstrates high iron content in the clay cannot be determined. Condition - old rim chips expected for age, the appearance of a crack on the lower section may be starch crazing in the firing, overall very good condition. Height 15". Circa 1860-70.
