Southern andirons from historic Panicello, near Abingdon, Virginia. Andirons consists of Federal eagle finials, a sword design in the shaft, and the words, "Public Utility" in the scrolled feet base. Panicello was the original home of Judge Peter Johnston, who fought in the Revolutionary war. Judge Johnston's grandson, John Warfield Johnston, was also born at Panicello and became a United States Senator representing Virginia for thirteen years. 17" height x 13" depth. Early 19th century.
