Virginia stoneware jar, stamped "E.W. Mort"

Virginia stoneware jar, stamped "E W Mort Alum Wells" and also stamped with a "1" surrounded by a circle. E.W. Mort (1853-1923) was born in Strasburg, VA and potted in Alum Wells, Washington County. Mort ceased making pottery in 1893 and became a Methodist minister. This jar is almost identical to a form illustrated in the "Legacy in Clay" museum exhibit catalog, William King Regional Arts Center, Abingdon, VA. Excellent condition. 8 " height. Circa 1880.
