Large East Tennessee stoneware crock, attributed to Charles Decker pottery of Washington Co., TN. Marked "4" on the top rim and side for gallon capacity, sine wave incising around the rim area, extruded lug handles. The size, style, and location of the "4" gallon stamp on the crock, the extruded handle forms, and sine wave design are all characteristics of Charles Decker pottery. For similar crock forms, refer to "The Pottery of Charles F. Decker: a life well made", Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum, p.33. Condition - shallow chip to underside of one handle, otherwise excellent. 11 1/8" height. Late 19th century.
