Landscape painting by Walworth Stilson, gouache on paper, rolling hills with farm houses bordered by trees, fence and wildflowers in the foreground, billowing clouds. Unsigned, estate of Walworth Stilson. Printed numbers on verso consistent with signed Stilson works in font and color. Very good condition. 18" x 23 1/8" painting. Circa 1900. Litchfield County, Connecticut artist, Walworth Stilson (1874-1962) attended the Detroit School of Art, studying under listed artist, John Ward Dunsmore. He completed his art studies at the Detroit Academy, where listed artist Joseph W. Gies was his instructor. His art career started in New York City at the "Illustrated American". He also illustrated for St. Nicholas Magazine and the Metropolitan Magazine of New York. Books illustrated by Stilson include "Our Fern and Their Haunts" by Willard N. Chute and "The Writers of Knickerbocker New York" by Hamilton Wright Mabie. An extensive biography of Stilson was done in a June 1925 article of the Bridgeport Life Newspaper of Bridgeport, Connecticut reviewing Stilson's artistic, poetic, and musical genius. Examples of Stilson's work are in the collections of the Yale University Art Gallery and The New Milford Historical Society of Connecticut.
