Description
(William, merchant in Salem, MA, c. 1606-81) Bond for £20 by Elias White & Unison Tisson to appear at Boston to answer certain charges in court, D.s. "Wm. Hathorne", manuscript, 7 lines, very small burnhole, browned, 77 x 126mm., 2nd January 1662/63. Document reads: "The condition is that Elias shall answer at Boston the 5 day of this month at the Court, to answer the Complaynt of Goody Bennet, & mary her daughter." William Hathorne was a prominent merchant and member of the Massachusetts Bay Company and a local judge. He came to New England on the "Arabella", one of John Winthrop's ships that brought large numbers of puritans to the colony in 1630. William's son, John (1641-1717), was a prominent judge in the Salem witch trials. A later descendant was Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-64), novelist.
