This fascinating chair was traditionally used by the Luguru Tribe as chief throne. The high back rest is decorated with open-work carvings; which reappear stylistically in the legs. Influences of the carving tradition of the Swahili coast are recognizable. On top of the backrest is a wooden head with masculine features discernible, which gazes fiercely at anyone placed in front of this chair.



The three-legged chair is in original condition with usual traces of age and with small cracks in the wood. The wood is slightly askew towards the right due to its ageing process. The chair is 1.26 cm high, and 42 cm wide; its seating surface is 37 x 41 cm.
