2 vol., first edition, number 252 of 520 copies , printed on handmade paper, original buckram, glacine dust-jackets, lacking brown paper flaps, t.e.g., others uncut, a fine set, slip-case, a little rubbed, 8vo, Piazza Press , 1929. A fine copy of the unexpurgated original edition of one of the classic works of war literature.Hemingway called it "the finest and noblest book of men in war that I have ever read." Published a year later in an expurgated form under the title Her Privates We. Manning's literary and artistic friends in London before the war included T.E.Lawrence, Max Beerbohm, Richard Aldington, Ezra Pound and William Rothenstein. He signed up as a Private in 1915 and fought on the Somme in 1916.
