Description

1888 "GROVER CLEVELAND / ALLEN G. THURMAN" Campaign Bandana, Choice Very Fine.
22" x 23.5" red cotton bandanna with black printed bust portraits of Cleveland and his running mate, Thurman. Listed as #616 in "Threads of History" by Collins. Attached to a large, clean canvas backing with stitched threads in each corner. Imagery includes a large eagle, crossed cannon, and flag at top, center. Dotted block design around the border with crossed flags in opposite corners with the slogans: Tariff Reform / For Revenue Only," and "No Surplus / Low Taxes." This design was based on a print of Grover Cleveland at the New York Historical Society, and on a photogravure of A.G. Thurman by Baker, Columbus, OH, engraved by H.B. Hall's sons, NY. Toning and staining to bandana--most visibly near the portraits. Still, a very attractive piece for framing and display.
