Description
Dated 1324 AH = 1907 AD, 406 x 167 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan
Collection VOK: Caucasus - Persia 60
In addition to small-format bags, most of them woven in the sumakh technique, and other everyday textile items the North West Persian Shahsavan tribes produced large coarsely-woven kilims with massive designs. Examples from the Bijar, Mianeh, Hashtrud, Saveh and Zarand regions are known. Dated in the four corners of the field, this example with an open red ground abrashed in several places was probably made in the surroundings of Saveh. Three huge hexagons with an interior drawing of double hooks surrounding a small central hexagon have been linked along the central axis to form a pole design with attached points at both ends. The centres of the first and third hexagons are pile-woven – a rare feature. The narrow reciprocal trefoil border in white and brown is characteristic of this kilim group. – Well preserved, original finishes all around.
