Description
Nueva Descripcion Desenboacadero desde el Puerto del Guarico para la Beulta de Espanola, por Entre el Caica Grande y la MariguanaSimon de Evia. Spain, c. 1730. (14 1/2 x 20 inches.) Simon de Evia was a spanish ship master. This handsome chart shows the southeastern end of the Bahamas group, including Great and little Inagua, Hogsty Reef, Acklins Inslands and Mayaguana. It also includes most of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Tortuga, and the north coast of Haiti. Permanent settlements in the Turks and Caicos Islands were made only after 1678 when settlers from Bermuda arrived to work the salt ponds. In 1710 the British were expelled by the Spaniards, but they returned and continued the salt trade with North America despite attacks by both French and Spanish raiders. British claims to the islands were formally recognized in 1765.
