A. R. Penck (born in 1939)

The painter, graphic artist and sculptor A. R. Penck, with proper name Ralf Winkler, was born in Dresden in 1939. He studied drawing in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1956, he submitted his application to the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and the Academy of Fine and Applied Arts of East-Berlin. However, he was rejected for his pretended missing talent. Since 1969, he has been more and more observed by the Ministry of State Security of the GDR. In 1976, he met Jörg Immendorff, with whom he collaborated in the following years. In their works, they promoted the abolition of the German-German border. In August 1980, Penck moved to the West. In 1983, he moved to London and, in 1988, to Düsseldorf, where he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. Since his retirement in 2003, he has been working and living in Dublin, Ireland.
