Max Ernst (1891–1976)

The German painter, graphic artist and sculptor Max Ernst studied philosophy, psychology and art history at the University of Bonn. As part of his studies, he worked on the art of mentally ill and often visited museums as a sideline. Only through friendship with August Macke and his encouragement Ernst decided in 1912 to devote himself autodidactic entirely to painting. With Johnannes Baargeld and Hans Arp he co-founded the DADA Group in 1919. In 1922 he moved to Paris, where he joined the Surrealist circle and became one of its most important members. During the Second World War, he fled in 1941 into exile in America. In 1953 Max Ernst went back to France and became a French citizen. Max Ernst is known for his surreal, fantastic images with enigmatic beings. (fea)
