This work by the Swiss artist Xanti Alexander Schawinsky shows a surreal representation of a hand with thin threads from spinning from its fingers, playing a kind of ping pong with two balls of different size.



The sheet is signed and dated ‘Schawinsky 1934’ and numbered ‘54/100’. It is mounted under a mat and is in good condition. In the middle right and left display are two small pinholes. The sheet dimensions are 50 x 69.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 63 x 76 cm. The frame also shows slight signs of use.



Alexander Schawinsky (1904-1979)

The Swiss painter, photographer and stage designer Alexander Schawinsky belonged to the Bauhaus circle around Walter Gropius. From 1921 to 1923, he was trained in the architectural studio of Theodor Merill in Cologne. In 1923, he briefly attended the School of Applied Arts in Berlin. In 1924, he went to the Bauhaus in Weimar, where such influential artists as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Oskar Schlemmer and László Moholy-Nagy were his teacher. In 1925, he went to the Bauhaus in Dessau along with Walter Gropius. There he mainly devoted himself to experimental photography. In 1933, he emigrated to Italy. In 1936, he moved to the United States, whose citizenship he accepted later on. In 1941, he moved to New York, where he was primarily active as a painter from 1950. Schawinsky's work has been exhibited in major museums, including the MoMA in New York. (cru)
