Josep Guinovart (1927-2007)
Born in Barcelona, the Catalan artist Josep Guinovart (1927-2007) is recorded for his informal and abstract expressionist works . He studied at the Escuela des Artes y Oficios de la Llotja. In 1948, he together with other famous artists, including Joan Miró and Antoni Tàpies, was co-founder of the Catalan artist group ‘Dau al Set’, an avant-garde movement in the time of the dictatorial regime of Francisco Franco. In 1951, Guinovart went on a scholarship to Paris. He there discovered the cubist works by Matisse and Picasso. Since 1957, he turned to abstract art, concentrating on the exploration of various materials. Today, his works are exhibited in major art collections, including the Fine Arts Museum of Long Island and the Guggenheim in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.
