Édouard Manet (1832-1883)

The French painter, etcher and lithographer Édouard Manet ranks next to Gustave Courbet, Pierre-August Renoir and Claude Monet amongst the most prolific artists of French Impressionism. Manet was initially taught as a pupil of Thomas Couture. Most of his works were met with criticism at his life time and refusal of the Salon Paris. Amongst his most famous paintings are ‘Absinth Drinker’, ‘Piper’, and ‘Bar in the Folies Bergère’. Several studies led Manet to travel Europe. After his death in 1883, his fame rose constantly and his impact on the development of painting of the late 19th Century emerged more clearly. Today, many of his works are hanging in almost every renowned picture gallery, for example the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the Belvedere in Vienna, the Kunsthaus Zurich, the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
