Very typical, large-scale print by the American artist James Rosenquist; single plates from the series ‘Horse Blinders’ fetch up to €7,800 at international auctions

The print ‘Horse Blinders (West)’ comes from the four-part set ‘Horse Blinders’ which was published in 1972 by Multiples Inc., New York. The four plates, of which all have the same emphasized landscape format and are equipped with a reflective metal foil should be shown according to the artist in a linear sequence or at right angles to each other in order to utilize the reflections of the metal foils.


The lithograph in colors with serigraph and metal foil is signed and numbered lower right in pencil 'Rosenquist 1972' and numbered and titled lower left ‘34/85 Horse Blinders (West)’. The sheet is minor darkened and shows scattered foxmarks in the upper margin. The image measures 66.2 x 173 cm, the sheet 92.3 x 173 cm.


James Rosenquist (born 1933)

The American pop art artist James Rosenquist began his studies at the University of Minnesota. He moved to New York in 1955 and studied at the Art Students League. This is where he met the artists Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Robert Indiana. He started with poster design but soon joined the upcoming pop art movement and became one of its main representatives. ‘F-111’, a monumental painting of room-encompassing size is his most famous work. The first solo exhibition took place in 1962 at the Green Gallery in New York. Today, his works can be seen in nearly all the important museums around the world, such as the MoMA in New York. A huge retrospective was shown at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2003.
