This very colourful poster was designed by Ernst Neumann in 1903 on the occasion of a performance by the Australian dancer Saharet in the Berlin Wintergarten theatre. This establishment, where the action was at least as hot as in the Parisian Moulin Rouge, was a cabaret by the train station Friedrichstraße in Berlin Mitte. The poster shows only too well that the world-famous can-can dancer had no trouble turning the heads of her male audience.

The poster is in optical appealing condition and mounted on linen. It does, however, display several age-related traces of wear, especially in the upper area of the poster, such as tears and creases, which are barely noticeable due to the mounting and do not impair the appealing appearance. The paper, mounted with two sheets, is slightly browned. The position of the mounting is clearly visible. Ernst Neumann’s artist signet and an inscription, “entw. u. lith. Ernst Neumann München“, are centrally positioned on the poster. The poster is inscribed lower left on the mounting, “95465 10 A95/3705“. The printer is noted in the lower right corner, “KUNSTANST HOLLERBAUM & SCHMIDT BERLIN N 65“. The dimensions are 140 x 94 cm (sheet).

Saharet (1872-1942)

The Australian can-can dancer was born Clarissa Rose Campbell in 1879 in Melbourne and received her training as a ballet dancer there. At the age of sixteen years, she moved to San Francisco with her family and got an engagement at the Orpheum Theatre as a danseuse excentrique. Afterwards, she travelled to New York and a short time later she was on her way to Paris, where the director of the well-known Folies Bergère engaged her as a dancer. Franz von Lenbach invited her to Munich two years later to paint her portrait; Franz von Stuck did so repeatedly between 1902 and 1907. Several artful posters provide information about the career of the Australian dancer.

Ernst Neumann (1871-1954)

The German artist was born 1871 in Kassel and studied painting in Kassel, Munich and Paris. Already during his time in Munich he illustrated for the magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus, especially caricatures of modern life. As an illustrator and poster designer he gained fame beyond Munich. Besides his work as an artist he made a name for himself especially in the field of vehicle body design, particularly automobiles, motor yachts and motorbikes.
