Description
Measurement: Diameter of mouth 1.625 in., H 10 7/8 in. This was a unusual slender body potted from mixed clay of dark brown and grey tone creating an irregular pattern of whorls, covered overall with a translucent straw color glaze. Marbling, known as mixed clay in Chinese became a popular decorative technique on ceramics of the Tang dynasty, and was applied to a number of different forms, including jars, cups, bowls, dishes and censers. The popularity of marbled wares with the Tang aristocracy was confirmed by the discovery among the items in the tomb of the Tang Princess Yongtai, who was given a grand reinterment in AD 706. See also Lot 10304 for another mixed clay porcelain.
