Cyrus W. Field Signed Card With Original Envelope
CYRUS W. FIELD.
(1877), Card Signed, Cyrus W. Field," 3" x 4.5," Choice Mint. This mint condition card bears the huge, ornate, 3"x 1.5" signature of the noted American businessman Cyrus Field. Also in this lot is the original envelope in which this card was mailed to autograph collector Albert L. Lord. Though the signature card is not dated, from other autographs in this collection we know that Lord sent out his autograph requests in 1876. Most were returned that year, with the remainder coming early in 1877. This envelope was postmarked in New York City on January 13, no doubt in 1877. The envelope is in nice condition, as it arrived at Lord’s residence, and has browned slightly along the bottom and left edges. (2 items).
Cyrus West Field (1819-1892) was an American merchant and promoter, best known for having laid the first sucessful transatlantic telegraph cable. He went on to lay cables across the Pacific, by way of Hawaii, to Asia.
