Levi P. Morton Signature While Serving As Vice-President
LEVI P. MORTON.
January 26, 1893, Card Signed, Levi P. Morton," 2.25" x 3.75," Choice Mint. Though undated, this pristine signed card is still with the original envelope in which it was sent to autograph collector Albert L. Lord. This envelope is also in nice condition, just as it was received at Lord’s residence, with a strong, clear Washington, DC cancellation and date, and a receiving cancel on the back. Lord used the back of this envelope to list this and some other autographs he had received, or perhaps didn’t receive, since the others are crossed out. At the time this card was signed, Morton was Vice-President of the United States. A very nice Vice-Presidential signature with an established provenance. (2 items).
Levi Parsons Morton (1824-1920) was a New York businessman and Congressman who served as the Vice-President of the United States under Republican President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893). Morton was a businessman in Boston before moving to New York and establishing Levi P. Morton & Company, a banking firm which helped underwrite loans to the Union during the Civil War (the firm reorganized in 1869 as Morton, Bliss & Company). He served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1879-1881) and after leaving the White House he was briefly the Governor of New York (1895-1897). Morton was the first American to climb the Statue of Liberty."
