Treasury Secretary John Sherman Signature
JOHN SHERMAN.
(1878), Card Signed, John Sherman - Secy. Treasy." 3" x 4.5," Choice Mint. This card, signed by John Sherman when he was Secretary of the Treasury, is in pristine condition, having been kept in its original envelope until recent years. Though the card is not dated and the postmark is too blurry to read, early autograph collector Albert L. Lord, to whom it was sent, noted the year on the back of the envelope. This envelope is in nice condition, just as it arrived through the mail more than a century ago, though it has toned slightly. A very nice signature with an established provenance. (2 items).
John Sherman (1823-1900) was a Congressman and Cabinet Member. A brother of General William T. Sherman, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1855-1861). As a fiscal expert, he helped establish the National Banking System (1863) and supported legislation that returned the United States to the gold standard. He served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1877-1881). In the U.S. Senate (1861-1877 & 1881-1897), he proposed the Sherman Antitrust Act and the Sherman Silver Purchase Act (1890). He later served briefly as Secretary of State (1897-1898), but resigned the day Congress declared war against Spain."
