Revolutionary War Letter Signed Gen. Jedediah Huntington

JEDEDIAH HUNTINGTON, Revolutionary War General and One of the Founders of the Society of the Cincinnati.
November 19, 1779, Autograph Letter Signed, Jed. Huntington," 1 page, 7.75" x 7.25," Fine. In this letter dated at Peekskill, NY, General Huntington writes to an unnamed Colonel to thank him for a small kindness. This letter reads, in full:
"Dear Col. - My Brother Ebenezer informs me you was so good as to take charge of a small Bundle of Cloathing (sic) for me. Please to send it (with) Bearer, Holmes, and accept the thanks of your Sincere Friend & obliged Servant, Jed Huntington."
This letter is in excellent condition aside from 2 bits of paper missing from the right edge (not affecting content) and a slight damp stain in the same area. Accompanied by an 1818 newspaper clipping on Huntington’s death and funeral. A personal letter from a Revolutionary War General.



Jedediah Huntington (1743-1818) graduated from Harvard in 1763 and began his career as a merchant. Shortly after the Battle of Lexington, however, he enlisted in the Connecticut Militia where he was made a Captain. In May 1777 he was promoted to Brigadier General and remained in service until the end of the Revolutionary War. In July 1778, he was a member of the court martial which tried Gen. Charles Lee for misconduct in the Battle of Monmouth, and in September he sat upon the court of inquiry into the case of Major Andre. In December of 1780, his was the only Connecticut Brigade that remained in the service. On the 10th of May, 1783, at a meeting of officers, he was appointed to a committee to draft a Constitution of the Society of the Cincinnati."
