President Andrew Johnson Signed Promotion For Bravery

ANDREW JOHNSON, 17th President of the United States.
May 21, 1866, Partially Printed Document, Signed Andrew Johnson," as President of the United States, being a Military Commission promoting John F. Hazelton to Major for bravery on the battlefield in the last days of the Civil War, Choice Extremely Fine. This impressive official document has the bold 3" signature, "Andrew Johnson" near the bottom, along with Edwin Stanton’s 2.5" signature as Secretary of War. Large, ornate, engraved vignettes decorate the top and bottom of this Commission Certificate. This original 19.5" x 15.75" document is in excellent condition, having light wear on the folds, but no holes, tears or foxing. Also in this lot is a Manuscript Document Signed "W. H. Whittelsey," as Assistant Adjutant General to Major General Wright, 6th Army Corps. This is an extract from Special Orders No. 97, dated May 6, 1865, which includes the order transferring Captain J. F. Hazelton from 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, to 2nd Division, where he is to assume the duties of Quartermaster of the 2nd Division and Depot Quartermaster at that location. This document is in excellent condition, with 2 small holes along the lower fold, and some paper separation on the upper fold. This document was probably the written orders actually given to Captain Hazelton at that time. Two marvelous related Civil War Documents, one with a Presidential Signature. (2 items).

John F. Hazelton (who appears in official records incorrectly as James Frank Hazelton) was appointed Captain for the 23rd Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers in 1862. He served at Vicksburg, where his regiment participated in the assault on Chickasaw Bluff and saw action at Arkansas Post. Upon reaching Young’s Point, Louisiana, three fourths of the regiment were stricken with disease due to poor sanitary conditions. In early 1863 Hazelton accepted a commission as Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain. He was brevetted to the rank of Major for gallantry at Sayler’s Creek, Virginia. Following the war President Hayes appointed him Consul at Genoa, Italy, and President Chester Arthur appointed him Consul at Hamilton, Canada."
