Abraham Lincoln Written Legal Document From The First Year Of His Career As A Lawyer
ABRAHAM LINCOLN, 16th President of the United States.
July 1837, Autograph Document Signed, Stuart & Lincoln," Written in the Hand of Abraham Lincoln, 1 page, 4.5" x 8," Choice Very Fine. This extremely early Lincoln legal document, was signed by 28 year-old Abraham Lincoln during the first year he was admitted to the bar. This original document is dated "Sangamon County [Illinois] Circuit Court July Term 1837," and is an attachment for $115.00 in the case of Abner Y. Ellis vs. Thomas P. Smith. The text reads: "The clerk will issue an attachment upon the affidavit herewith filed returnable to the next term of said court." It was also in 1837, that Lincoln made his first protest against slavery in the Illinois House, stating that the institution was ""founded on both injustice and bad policy." Docketing on the back of this document, signed by clerk William Butler, indicates it was initially filed on June 17, 1837. There are minor repairs to the right corners and some show-through from the docket on the back, otherwise this Early Lincoln Document is in excellent condition.
