World War I, Red Star Animal Relief Poster, Help Him to Help U.S.!" by James Montgomery Flagg, Rare, Very Fine.
This rare and unusual First World War Poster depicts a worried looking Uncle Sam with his arm lovingly around the neck of a horse. This poster was commissioned by the American Red Star Animal Relief organization, whose national headquarters was at Albany, NY. The message reads: "Help the Horse to Save the Soldier." The Red Star Animal Relief, raised funds to aid horses used by the armed forces during World War I. Red Star supplied horse ambulances, bandages, medicines and veterinary supplies, and was credited with saving the lives of countless horses on the battlefield. The organization also asked the public to care for horses sent back from the battlefield. This 33" x 23" poster was drawn by popular American artist, James Montgomery Flagg. This poster has been professionally laid to a heavy, archival linen backing for preservation. Overall this poster is in very nice condition, with extensive professional restoration work on the margins and across the top, and some trimming of the left and right margins. A rare poster on a little known aspect of the First World War.
