Design icon of the Italo-American Designer
The diamond chair of Harry Bertoia seems like a mathematic sculpture of an organic formed grid. Bertoia began his career as sculptor and gold smith. He created sculptures out of iron wire, a technique that he adapted for the diamond chair. That is how a whole series of wire furniture were built, which suited perfectly in the elegant interior of the 1950s. The diamond chair was in contrast to other designs of that time pretty expensive, as its manufacturing still needed loads of handcraft. As the preformed wires had to be individually welded.
The presented pair of chairs was made in the 1950s. They are 74 cm high and measure 84 x 68 cm. They are in good, original condition with normal signs of age and usage, such as partly flash rust.
Harry Bertoia (1915-1978)
In 1946 Bertoia moved to California after he graduated at Detroit Technical High School and the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts. Here he helped Charles Eames to develop methods of working with plywood. Bertoia spended later long years with experiments in light, volume and sound works.
