This Armchair by Koloman Moser was designed around 1901 and goes back to the famous Austrian bentwood tradition of Thonet era and yet in the former sense is very modern. The frame is developed from two interlocking bentwoods for the backrest and rear legs as well as armrests and front legs. However, this chair is missing the characteristic flourishes and certain ease, nevertheless it is distinguished by elegantly curved and clean lines. The armchair was manufactured by J. & J. Kohn.

The chair is 90 cm high and measures 59 x 60 cm. It is in good condition with some signs of age and wear.

Koloman Moser (1868-1918)

Koloman Moser was born in Vienna in 1868. He studied from 1886-1893 at the Academy of Fine Arts, among others under Franz Rumpler, Christian Griepenkerl and Matthias von Trenkwald. He also created illustrations for magazines such as the ‘Meggendorfer-Blätter’. From 1893-95 he also attended art school where he later worked as a teacher. Moser was co-founder of the Vienna Secession in 1897. His artistic environment included the painters Carl Moll, Ferdinand Hodler and Cuno Amiet. In addition, he has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions.

Jakob & Josef Kohn

Jacob Kohn (1791–1866) founded his company together with his son Josef (1814–1884) in 1849. They produced wooden components and soon began producing bentwood. They opened production centers in Bohemia, Krakow and Russia and already in 1900 more than 6300 workers were busy producing more than 5500 pieces of furniture each day. Thanks to the cooperation with such renowned artists as Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos and Gustav Siegel, the company soon made a name for itself as the producer of fashionable and modern furniture. They received many awards, gold medals and even medals from Austria, Spain, Belgium and Russia. The company merged with the Mundus AG in 1914 that also produced for Thonet (Thonet-Kohn-Mundus). Pieces of furniture by Kohn can today be seen in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris as well as in the Museum for applied art, the MAK Vienna.
