The Palace of the Republic was opened up in 1976. Because of the amount of lamps that has been installed the people of East Germany named the building ‘Erichs Lampenladen’ which means Erich’s (Erich Honecker) lamp shop. The ceiling of the great entrance hall was illuminated by a modular light fixture by German designer Peter Rockel. It was designed in 1975. Each lamp has a globular glass shade and is connected by an aluminum rod system. Each lamp has a different position in space which makes a lively light surface. This contrasts wonderfully with the geometrical structure of the rod system.

The lamp has a 16-light fixture. Its height is 100 cm and it measures 300 x 200 cm. It is in good condition with a few signs of age and wear like flashrust.
