Description
Andy Warhol, American 1928-1987- ''Brillo Box''; mixed media marker on cardboard, signed in black marker pen, in a perspex case, 21x19x8cm (including case) Note: Andy Warhol's iconic 'Brillo Boxes', his first sculptural works, exhibited in 1964 at Stable Gallery in New York, raised questions about our accepted ideas about and definitions of ''high art'' using deadpan humor and pop culture imagery. He appropriated a consumer-minded product (literally, the actual cardboard boxes with Brillo pads still inside) and elevated them into the realm of fine art sculpture. Warhol's 'Brillo Boxes' took the mundane and transformed it into something thought-provoking, encouraging viewers to reassess the aesthetics found in commercialism, as well as re-evaluate their own ideas about the definition of art.
Condition
brillo box has some scuffing to corners, overall handled condition with some glue residue marks of old stickers (perhaps old price labels) evident top right corner on the front, some marks to the box such as a brown spot above the 'o' on the front, there is a scuff to the bottom left corner of the front of the box and a slight loss to the surface as a result, may all be original to time of production. perspex case affixed at the top with tape to each side overall good condition
