Description
Frank George Lenz (1867-1894), avid cyclist and photographer, famous for his attempt to circumnavigate the world. Lenz perished near Erzurum Turkey at the hands of local tribesmen in May of 1894, almost 2 years after his departure. "Outing" Magazine sponsored the expedition. This collection includes 10 original photos and letters, some are unpublished. Photo's "scene from the great west" as published in David Herlihy's epic tale "The Lost Cyclist". Some photo's are titled including "school in Northern Alabama", "waterwheel mill near New VA", "poolroom Hagerstown Bicycle CLub", "McCalla Alabama", "National Pike near B...O". Plus earlier photos of Lenz on his high wheel. Sizes range from 3 1/2" x 5 3/4" 0 4 1/4" x 7 1/4", photos have creases and imperfections. Envelopes from China Japan, Tenton NJ and New York City, plus letters C. 1889 - 1893. Letter describing a trip to New York in 1889 and from China in 1893. The envelopes are addressed to "Pettocord Bros. Pittsburgh PA". This archive is of one ot the world's greatest Wheelmen.
