Description
An African mask from the Guro tribe, Central Ivory Coast, West Africa, 1950’s - 1960’s, from the Yaure sub-tribe as indicated by the hornbill or Lomane bird on the top, with bull influence. The wearer would bend over and touch the body with the mask in an act of symbolic purification that was intended to prevent worms from consuming the body. A nice older piece showing good age with a nice patina. H: 18 1/3 in (46.5cm). Ex New York private collection purchased in the 1970's.
