Mappin & Webb (since 1863)

In 1810, Joseph Mappin founded an engraving company in Sheffield. After his death, the firm was taken over by one of his sons, also called Joseph, producing cutlers in Sheffield. From 1846, his son Frederick Thorpe Mappin managed the company. The company with the name ‘Joseph Mappin & Co.’ was joined by his brothers. In 1846, it was merged with William Samson & Sons and named ‘Mappin Brothers’. One of the brothers, John Newton Mappin, founded his own company in 1850 with the name ‘Mappin & Co.’, which in 1863 was renamed ‘Mappin & Webb’. In 1902, Mappin Brothers merged with Mappin & Webb. In 1963, the company was taken over by British Silverware Ltd. The silver manufactory of Mappin & Webb was closed in 1971. Today, Mappin & Webb is a subsidiary of Sears Holdings Ltd. (cko)
