Minna Beckmann-Tube (1881-1964) was the daughter of Minna Tube-Römler and sister of Martin Tube, later mother of Peter Beckmann. She met Max Beckmann in 1902 in Weimar, where both studied at the Grossherzogliche Kunstschule [Grandducal Art Art Academy]. They married in 1906 and were divorced in 1925. After her marriage Ninna Beckmann-Tube abandoned from the visual arts and pursued a career as singer, particularly of Wagnerian roles. Beckmann’s nickname for Minna was ‘Mink’, he portrayed his wife in seven prints and in at least twenty paintings.

Condition:

The drypoint shows slight mat stain. The sheet dimensions differ from the catalogue raisonné (there 53 x 38 cm are indicated), thus the lower and the side margins probably are somewhat trimmed. The sheet is hinged to a mat with 2 narrow strips of double sided tape verso at the upper corners. The frame is in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. The plate measures 17 x 13.3 cm, the sheet is 46.3 x 31.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 54 x 44 cm.

Max Beckmann (1884-1950)

Max Beckmann was born in Leipzig in 1884. He studied at the Grandducal Art Academy in Weimar in the years between 1900 and 1903. In 1905 he moved to Berlin where he joined the artist group Berlin Secession. In 1910 he was voted as the youngest board member. It was Paul Cassirer who organized in 1913 a large retrospective of Beckmann’s work with a total of 47 paintings. A year later Max Beckmann was awarded with the Villa Romana prize which enabled him a year-long study visit in Florence. In the First World War he volunteered as a paramedic while creating sketches of his war experiences. In this period Beckmann’s style got simpler, but more expressive, vigorous and socially critical. In 1925 he was appointed professor in Frankfurt at the Städelschule. From 1929 to 1932 he spent the winter months in Paris, while already being fiercely criticized by the Nazis, who dismissed him in 1933 from his teaching position. In 1937 Beckmann’s work was classified ‘degenerate art’ and 590 of his works were removed from public German museum collections. In the same year the artist emigrated to The Netherlands and finally in 1947 to the USA. (fea)
