Christo (b. 1935) & Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009)
Christo, born as Christo Javacheff, grew up as the son of an industrialist family in Bulgaria. He studied from 1953 to 1956 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. In 1957, he studied for one semester at the Academy of Arts in Vienna. Since 1958, he lived in Paris where met Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon.
From very early on in his artistic activity, Christo began wrapping objects. He followed the idea that the act of wrapping makes visible the banality and the excess of most objects that exist in our world. Jeanne-Claude always supported him in the realization of his projects by negotiating with mayors, interest groups, environmental activists and residents to receive approval for the projects. (cbo)
