Renowned as one of the great sports photographers, Neil Leifer has photographed countless heavyweight title fights. The image here depicts Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay) throwing a punch against Sonny Liston during the World Heavyweight Title fight in Miami. The fatigue of both boxers is palpable, as sweat flies off of Liston’s skin as he receives the blow.

Executed in 1964, c-print is signed and numbered fourteen from an edition of one hundred and fifty. The sheet measures 24 x 20 inches. In overall good condition.

Neil Leifer (American, b. 1942)

Born in New York City, Neil Leifer would gain admission to New York Giants games by pushing in wheelchairs of handicapped patrons. At the NFL title game in 1958, Leifer caught images of the game winning touchdown, selling the images to Sports Illustrated. From there he became a boy wonder, with his first Sports Illustrated cover at the age of 19. By 1960, his pictures regularly appeared in every major national magazine, including Look, LIFE, Time, People and Newsweek. Over the course of his career, Leifer has photographed 16 Olympic Games, the first 12 Super Bowls, and countless World Series games and heavyweight title fights. Leifer has published 16 books, including the 1978 best-seller “Sports.” Recently, Leifer has been working as a filmmaker, producer and director.
