Description
Native American, North America, Great Plains, Sioux, Lakota, ca. 1880-1930. Native American beaded medallion decorated with a Morning Star pattern in black, red, and yellow glass seed beads and aqua colored glass seed beads for the background. The dangles and beaded chain that the medallion hangs from are comprised of aqua and white glass seed beads. The back of the medallion is soft leather. Lakota people replaced traditional quillwork with beads when the European traders began using beads to trade. Prior to contact with Europeans, Native Americans made beaded items by using cut shells, coral, bone, dyed and flattened porcupine quills and various seeds. After the arrival of glass, tribes began creating a greater variety of beaded decorative arts using the myriad colored beads available and developed new techniques of beading oftentimes developing distinctive regional styles.
