Description
BASEBALL: GIL HODGES
First baseman and manager (1924-72); standout on the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers; equally adept at defense and slugging, at his retirement he held the record for career grand slams; as a manager, led the "Miracle Mets" to their 1969 championship. Scarce and desirable Typewritten Letter Signed "Gil Hodges," 1/3 page, 4to, on imprinted stationery of the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, September 6, 1957. He tells fan Mathew J. Feeney of Brooklyn, "Baseball players get many thrills during a career but none will ever match those I experienced on July 19th when the wonderful fans of Brooklyn celebrated my Night at Ebbets Field..." Edge wear and nicks at folds, stains at left and on verso, light dampstain at upper right, otherwise in very good condition. 1957 was the last season the Dodgers spent in Brooklyn. They and cross-town rivals the New York Giants, each unable to replace outdated stadiums, moved to the West Coast before the 1958 season - the Dodgers to Los Angeles and the Giants to San Francisco.
