Description
Bronze with gilding. China, Ming dynasty, approx. 17th cent.
Possibly the most adored Chinese goddess, reaching beyond her Buddhist personification – the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara – as an ancient mother-goddess. The bronze offers her in padmasana (lotus seat) and with rich adornments as well as a tall crown with a chignon protruding from behind it. She is holding a vessel in one hand, a sprout symbolising child bearing (sons) in the other. The crown holds a small image of Buddha Amitabha, Amituo Fo in China, at the front. Largely preserved lacquer gilding, smoke patina. On a fitted wooden base. HEIGHT (WITHOUT BASE) 22 CM
