Description
Yellow bronze. India, Maharashtra, 18th to 19th cent.
Cobras are semi-godly creatures in India, they are said to possess inteligence and wisdom as well as supernatural powers and were worshipped accordingly, especially in South India. In this messing bronze, part of the scaled body forms a wide ring as the base, from which the typical cobra plate – vaulted and scaled on the front – projects upright. The head is small, the tongue protruding forwards, an elevation in the neck area resembles a conical stylized lotus bud. Remnants from cult paintings. HEIGHT 26 CM
From an old Viennese collection of a former diplomat
