Description
Bronze. Burma, courtly style, Kongbaung, 19th cent.
A rare depiction of a crowned Buddha in Kongbaung dynasty style attire, even wearing rings on his fingers. The “earth-witness†gesture, curiously executed here with both hands, symbolising the victory over Mara, the embodiment of evil in Buddhism. A conical protrusion on the head topped by a spiked lotus blossom. The facial features are distinctly influenced by the Siamese Ayutthya style, the eyes inlaid. A red glass jewel on the chest, five standing worshippers within arched reserves. Damages on the lowermost section of the base. HEIGHT 42 CM
