Description
John Dowd's early mahogany cane. The ivory small knob handle is 1 1/3" high and 7/8" across the top. Incised and inked on one side is "John Dowd", in angled block lettering. The mahogany shaft is carved with one step and in ends with a 1" brass ferrule, a replacement of a much longer one, now long-lost. The overall length is now 37" and the condition is very good. It is American, ca 1750, and was probably at staff length (38" to 42"), at one time. (In America's early days, all exotic materials, such as ivory, mahogany, etc., had to be imported. Most if it was from England and this piece with its small handle reflects the scarcity and high cost of such materials). It is a very nice early example. Estimate: $650-$850. This lot is subject to shipping restrictions outlined in Terms and Conditions.
