A great cane of an English VIP. The ivory handle is 4 3/4" high and 1 1/4" at its widest. It depicts a famous Victorian English personage, perhaps the Prime Minster Lord Derby, or an M.P., or even a noted literary figure. The gentleman has period garb and is wearing a moustache with a thin beard. There is a solid 18k gold 7/8" collar that is maker marked "J.H." for Joseph Heming, and it has London hallmarks for 18k, and 1864. The shaft is black-painted dark hardwood that ends with a 1" ivory ferrule. The overall length is 36" and the condition is very good. It is a very fine carved ivory example. Estimate: $1000-$1500.
