Description
A great silvered bronze lizard sword cane curio. The silvered bronze "L" handle is 2 1/3" high and 3 3/4" to the side. It depicts in outstanding detail, a lizard twisted around a tree branch, stalking a fly. There are very tiny red eyes that may be garnets or rubies and the handle is signed "A. Cain", for the maker: Auguste Nicholes Cain, the famous bronze artist who was born in Paris in 1822 and died in 1894. (See Google). The shaft is stepped malacca and at the first step, it opens with a quarter turn to the right and a hard straight pull. A 12 1/2" blade can be removed from a brass tongue and groove fitting. The blade is diamond shaped and retains mast of its fine, decorative bluing. The piece terminates with a 3/4" burnished brass ferrule. The overall length is 34 3/4" and the condition is very good. It is French, ca 1870 and it is a marvelous example from the George & Carol Milne Collection. Estimate: $1500-$2500.
