Description
A very nice all-baleen cane with a decorated gold handle. The petite gold-filled handle is 1 1/2" high and 3/4" across the top. It is inscribed: "Voted J. T. Detwiler, by the Citizens of Columbia at Vigilant Fair". The shaft is one piece of slightly flexible baleen carved with many faux thorns, each highlighted with a tiny white dot, probably ivory. It finishes with a very thin 1" brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 36 7/8" and the condition is excellent. It is American, ca 1885, and it a great example of the use of whale products by 19th Century cane makers. Estimate: $800-$1200. This lot is subject to shipping restrictions outlined in Terms and Conditions.
