President James Madison Signed “Steubenville” Land Grant
JAMES MADISON (1751 - 1836). Fourth President of the United States (1809–1817), hailed as the “Father of the Constitution” for being instrumental in the Drafting of the United States Constitution and as the Key Champion and Author of the United States Bill of Rights.
April 10, 1809-Dated Federal Period, Partially-Printed Vellum Document Signed, “James Madison” as President, being a Land Grant, measuring about 15” x 9”, Choice Very Fine. The text is preprinted in black with blanks filled in and easily readable in rich brown. The grantee was “William Beans of Loudoun County, Virginia” and the land granted was among that to be sold at Steubenville. Two typical light fold creases, the Seal was removed at some point with its red wax residue still present. Countersigned by “R. Smith,” Secretary of State. Other than one tiny worm hole and a .5” long split at the outer left edge fold, this document is well above average and quite clean in appearance. The signature of President James Madison is prominent and rich brown measuring a large 2.75” long and is very clearly seen.
JAMES MADISON served as a Politician much of his adult life. A Virginia Statesmen and President of the Slave “Colonization Society,” he was a Slaveholder at his inherited plantation known as Montpelier, and owned Hundreds of Slaves during his lifetime to cultivate tobacco and other crops.
