Description
c. 1840-1880, Edo period. A very thin and finely potted porcelain cup on a tall foot ring, finely painted in polychrome and gold overglaze enamels to depict Yue Fei (1103-1142), a famous Chinese Southern Song dynasty general who fought against the Jurchen, and Wen Tianxiang (1236-1283) the prime minister of the Southern Song dynasty whou fought against the Yuan Mongolians. An inscription of one of Wen Tianxiang's analects about being a good official surrounds a roundel filled with constellations and to its opposite another inscription of the "Song of Japan." Iron red "Zoshuntei Sanpo" mark to base. An identical cup is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, acquisition number 1904-779,a. Approx. 2 1/2 by 4 3/8 in. diam., 6.5 by 11.2 cm. diam.
